Full Description

A wheel-thrown body shard of an Anglo-Saxon bottle, found 1860-70 at the London Road end of St. Radigund's Road (at approx TR308424). It is an ovoid body shard with a narrow neck. The rim and base are missing; five rows of continuous rouletting, triple rows of small squares in waves with a rectangular grid in the upper valleys. Only the top part of the roulette pattern is impressed (see illustration card). The fabric is a grey sandy ware with a fewlarge chalk grits; ht. 22.5, m. 4.1, max 16.5cm. Type le. It is inthe Kingsford Collection at Dover museum. (1)
