Full Description
(summarised from source)
In 1862 a small stone sundial was discovered on the site of the church of St. Martin-Le-Grand on the west side of Market Square when several adjoining houses were pulled down and some remains of the ancient fabric of the historic church were revealed. The sundial is formed of a cube of fine grained oolite, measuring about 12cm in each direction. On one of the faces there is a vertical dial in the form of a heart shaped cavity, scored with 11 divisions or hour lines. On the other faces are semi-cylindrical cavities, with, on one side, the moiety of a triangular pyramid, each of these is again scored with 4-5 hour lines, the upper edge of the cavity in each instance cutting the line drawn in the hollow, thus serving the purpose of a gnomon. The fourth side is plain and roughly worked and on the top is an iron dowel fixed by lead. The mouldings are worked on all sides of the cube which presents the general appearance of the capital of a small pillar. From the slight dimensions of the support on which the cube of stone would have rested suggests that it may have been fixed against a wall, either on a face of a buttress on the south side of a building or church or on a cloister court etc. The date of this object is unknown, it may relate to the original Norman church of St. Martin-Le-Grand. It may equally belong to one of the Roman structures which are known to exist both below the area occupied by the church and in its immediate vicinity, and Roman material, including some coins, were also discovered during the demolition of these buildings in 1862. The sundial is now in Dover Museum. (1)
