Full Description
(summarised from publication)
A fragment of Medieval pottery was discovered un-stratified during demolition in early 1945 between Snargate Street and Adrian Street, (centred TR 31914123). It was first noticed by Warrant Officer M. Rix. The vessel is of Pingsdorf ware, which was distributed in the Rhineland and Holland and north-east France between the ninth and twelfth centuries. In the UK Pingsdorf ware has been found only in London, where 11 examples are known, and is indicative of trade with Rhineland in and after the 9th century. The Dover fragment is French. The vessel may date to the second half of the eleventh century. The fragment is about one quarter of the rim and the upper part of the pitcher. It is wheel turned, of fine white ware fired very hard and unglazed. The rim is almost square in section, heavily moulded and sharply offset from the neck. The decoration consists of narrow, dull red painted stripes running vertically down the side at intervals, the fragment shows two such stripes. (1)
