Full Description
A Medieval Aquamanile was found in 1974 in a Medieval garderobe shaft close to St Martin-le-Grand church (TR 34 SW:36, TR 31874144). The Aquamanile from Dover is in the form of a ram and may be paralleled at Scarborough, Grimston and Medlingham. The ram form is particularly associated with Yorkshire, being one of the most spectacular products of the Scarborough Kilns and it is likely that there is a connection with the Yorkshire wool trade in the Medieval period. It is supposed that these vessels were copied from bronze versions known in Germany during the thirteenth century and that its origins may lie in the Middle East some centuries earlier. The specimen from Dover was associated with other thirteenth or fourteenth century pottery. (1,2)
