Full Description
TR 368 558 Medieval finds, Sandhills. The site is located 200 yds to the N of the Chequers Inn at Sandown, Deal. During field survey and through observation work after severe flooding in January 1978, a large quantity of Tyler Hill pottery from Canterbury and Saintonge ware from near Bordeaux, France was recovered. A long cross silver penny of Edward I was also found on the site by Mr A Oxford of the Deal and Walmer Local History and Research Group. The pottery and coin support a date of 1250-1300 AD for a settlement at this site. The pottery is now in Deal Museum. (1,2)
