[TR 33555865] Stone Coffins Found [T.I.] (1)

A stone coffin, thought to be Roman, was found during the reconstruction of Stonar House. (2)

No further information was obtained during field investigation; the site lies under rough pasture. (3)

From the Register of Scheduled Monuments:

Later in origin than Sandwich and now quite deserted, this port had a period of great prosperity in the 12 and 13th centuries as a rival to Sandwich on the opposite bank. The northern half of the site has been extensively quarried but a quantity of medieaval material has been salvaged by the late W.P.D Stebbing. The S part until recently in RAF hands, lying towards the strand, is apparently inviolate. Burials and Roman(?) remains are reported from this area (5).
