(Name TR 326586) Gallows Field (G.T.) (1) In a description of the Extent and Boundary of the Liberty of the Town of Sandwich, temp. Henry III, (a) the bounds are described as 'by the Thief downs where persons condemned within the Liberty are buried alive'. The 'Thief downs' can be identified with the area shown and described as 'Gallows Field' in 1844 (b). Gardiner (c), apparently, does not agree with this, but most other authorities accept the present OS siting. (2)
