[Extends from TR 3270 5851 to TR 3286 5829] The Delf [GT. - 2 places] (1) The Delf at Sandwich, an artificial stream which enters Sandwich near the site of the New Gate (at the "roaring gutter (2)) and discharges its water into the haven near the site of the Canterbury Gate, was the town's sole water supply until the end of the 19th c. The earliest known mention is 1206. (2-4) The Delf can be traced through the town from the New Gate (TR 35 NW 15'H') to near the Canterbury Gate (TR 35 NW15'A') as a culverted stream varying in width from 3 feet to 6 feet. (5)
