Full Description
[TR 32955814] Guildhall [NR] (Restored) (1) The Guildhall, Sandwich, was built in 1579 and encased in yellow brick in 1812. In 1912 it was restored and enlarged and it was further enlarged in 1933. (2) The Guildhall is as described above, in good condition, and houses the courtroom and council offices. See GP AO/64/141/2. (3) Cattle Market (centre). The Guildhall. Grade II*. Built in 1579. In 1812 it was encased in yellow brick. In 1912 it was restored and the SW wing added. Still further enlarged in 1933 and an addition built in 1973 at right angles across the square. Nothing before the 1812 encasement is now visible from the exterior, of brick and imitation timbering, but the interior contains much of the original work, particularly the panelling of the Court Room which dates from 1607 and paintings forming part of the Council Chamber walls depicting the battle of the "Glorious 1st of June". (4) The building was erected about 1567 and continued practically undisturbed until 1819, when it was 'modernised', by being cased over entirely in yellow brick. The overhanging eaves were removed and a parapet carried up sufficiently to obliterate practically the whole of the view of the roof. The exterior of the building continued thus until about 1912 when a wing on the SW side which was found to be past repair, had to be demolished, and the entirely new portion of the hall, forming what is now known as the Grand Jury Room was erected. The whole of the 1819 brick casing was then stripped off, and the front restored as nearly to the original as possible. (5) A brief description of the Guildhall given by Alderman F.W Lass to members of the Royal Archaeological Institute. (6) Brief mention. (7)
