Full Description
TR 32305652. The cutting edge from a Bronze Age axe was found, on thesurface in an orchard on the south-east side of the A256, Dover - Sandwich Road, near Feilderland Farm in May 1985 by Peter Hancock who retains it. The fragment measures some 35mm across the cutting edge end has a rectangular cross-section. It is 7.5m thick and 17mm long, with no trace of casting seams. Along the broken edge, on one face there is adefinite horizontal cut-mark penetrating into the metal for almost 1mm. This does not appear to be recent damage and suggest that the axe was deliberately cut up, which indicates that it is a piece of scrap. Due to the small size it is not possible to determeine the exact form of this axe but it is almost certainly either a Middle Bronze Age palstave or a Late Bronze Age socketed axe. (1)
