Full Description

TR 33655509. A fragment from the blade of a Bronze Age sword was found, on the surface, in a ploughed field by the A258 on the south western slopes of a chalk ridge in January 1985 by ColinTyman. The object consists of a short lenght of bronze sword blade broken at both ends. The metal is in good condition. The piece is 24mm long with a lozenge shaped cross-section, and is between 5.5mm and 6.5mm thick. It is slightly tapered and is 32mm to 35mm wide. The edges ofthe blade are still quite sharp and have been hollow-ground for a 3-4mm wide strip on both faces. Modern damage to the piece has been minimal and the breaks appear to have occurred in antiquity, suggesting that this represents scrap due to be re-cast. There seems little doubt that the fragent belongs to a Late Bronze Agesword. C. Tyman retains the blade fragment. (1)
