Full Description

[TR 37275024] Pewter Vessels found c. A.D. 1900 (NAT) (1) Late Iron Age and Roman pottery and a lead vessel and saucer (stated to be pewter (3)) all indicating a cremation burial ground, were found c.1886 in Mr Stock's grounds at St Mildreds, near the new church at Walmer. (2,3) St Mildreds has recently been demolished. Neither the demolition contractors, Messrs. R.J Hutchings of Deal, nor the present land owner, Mr Tugwell, Warwick Road, Deal, knew of the 19th century discoveries, and nothing further has been uncovered to their knowledge. The site is shortly to be redeveloped. Two sherds of coarse dark grey gritty hand-made ware were picked up during fieldwork. Finds from this site are held by the Corporation of Deal (a). (4)
