Full Description

A small Anglo-Saxon hand-made pot or cup on display in Deal Castle Museum, part of the Deal Town Hall Collection, was found in digging for stone near the Great Mongeham to Ripple road in 1911 (a,b). A distribution map in the museum compiled by Dunning and Stebbing marks with an 'A/S find' symbol a stone pit centred at TR 35075102, now disused and grassed over. Stebbing's MS 2" map in Deal Public Library shows this pit as the site of Belgic, Roman and Saxon finds, but no information concerning the Belgic or Roman aspects has been found. (1) ?Inhumation cemetery, Great Mongeham. A hand-made saucepan-shaped pot with a slightly everted rim was found in 1911, between Great Mongeham and Ripple. Now in the Deal Town Hall Museum. The site may be as much as several hundred yards from the Mongeham Bottom site (TR 35 SE 48), but it is possibly part of the same cemetery. (2) additional reference (3-6)
