Full Description

(TR 38005256. Site located to place name only). A Costrel was brought up early in 1954 by Fred Upton, the coxwain of the Walmer Lifeboat, whilst fishing in the Downs off Deal (see illustration card). The bottle, with strap loops damaged, water-warn and serpula-encrusted, was decorated with a slip and of a rare type. It is likely to be later than the sixteenth century in date. The vessel may have a non-English, near Eastern origin. (There is no informaton as to the present whereabouts of the "Costrel"). (1)
