Full Description
TR 3642 5085 Roman and Iron Age Finds from Dossett Court, Upper Deal. In May and June 1982 the Dover Archaeological Group observed a major extension to the Royal British Legion flats at Dossett Court, SE of Deal waterworks, on the NE side of St Richard's Road (see illustrationcard no 1). A total of 80 archaeological features were recorded in anarea of 3000 sq metres of which many seemed to be pits of various shapes and sizes, with some 20 postholes and at least 11 ditches and gullies. Over half the features did not produce any finds and cannot, therefore be dated. 24 produced Roman pottery. 6 fairly certain Iron Age features were recorded. 2 dateable vessels, nos 8 and 9, (see illustration card no 2) could be placed somewhere between c1000- 800/700 BC. The remaining pottery, nos 10-16, (see illustration card no 2) was dateable to the period 600-350 BC. Clearly two distinct Iron Age assemblages. The finds and site notes are located in Dover Museum.
