Summary

In January 1977 workmen recovered a collection of 60 sherds of pottery and a small collection of animal bones during the excavation of a new vault at the Hamilton Road Cemetery, Deal at GraveIRC 6042 . The pottery and bones were found at a depth of 3.5 feet. The superintendent stated that these finds were not unusual as sherds of a similar kind were often coming to light. The finds were examined by Mr N.E.Tomaszewski and Mr J.Gaunt and were pronounced to be of Iron Age date. The sherds were found to represent six vessels. The pottery was initially dated to the C2 and C3 BC but subsequently placed nearer to 500 BC.
