Full Description

(TR 3800 5255 Site located to place name only). Two incomplete vessels found at Deal by Mr S. Hazzledine Warren (see illustration card). The example on the right has been restored with plaster and is7 ins high and 8 ins in diameter. The pottery is thin and dark brown in colour and has a slightly polished surface. Two other noticeable features are the tall upright neck, and the incised step pattern ornament derived from the Greek fret. The example on the left has been reconstructed. It is 10.5 ins in height. The fabric of this vessel contains particles of shell or grit, and it is reddish-brown incolour. The decoration, consisting of three zones of incised lines, is in the same tradition as that on the other urn. The style is also found on pottery in the Morel Collection from Somme Bionne, and the Deal urns, which may be contemporary, represent the same early La Tene`marnian' culture. The vessels were presented by Mr Hazzledine Warrento the BM. (1) Etruscan wares dating before the C5 BC are considered to be proto- types of the step-pattern urns (the vessel on the right). (2)
