Full Description
(TR 38005255. Sited to place name only). The telegraph station at Deal was one terminal of the Admiralty Shutter Telegraph between London and Deal finished in January 1796. The site was in the Navy yard, abutting on the shore. It is likely that the telegraph stood on or very close to the beach. Such a position is low-lying for telegraphy but doubtless the sea itself provided a suitable background. The Kentish Traveller's Companion (1799) states that "At the south end of Beach Street, close to the sea, stands a telegraph, being the first of the series.... conveying intelligence from the Downs to the Admiralty office in Westminster".
