Full Description
(TR 3800 5256 Sited to place name only). Deal's early water supply, 1702. Two competing groups sought to bring fresh water to Deal. On theone hand William Rider and Edward Burdett (granted a charter in 1688)and on the other William Warner who began to install a system between1699/1700. By 1702 'Mr Warner and partners have actually brought very excellent water into the town at Deal'. Warner's scheme was to supply water from a well and Rider's was to supply it from a river, and both appear to have been carried into effect and to have continued in use side by side until after the passing of the Deal Water Act in 1840. A George Sorocold of Derby appears to have provided an engine for Rider and Burdett. (1)
