Full Description
A polished flint axe was found in 1923 beneath about 3 feet of brickearth whilst excavating for the surface layout of Betteshanger Colliery. Nearby was the remains of a fire, a small piece of stained earth, with pieces of charcoal and a few weathered oyster shells. The axe is in a Scottish museum. (1) Nothing was known about these finds either at the colliery or at the Dover offices of the NCB. They were probably discovered at the same time as the pits (see TR 35 SW 23), which were found in an area centred at TR 33725302. (2) additional reference (3)
