Full Description
(TR 33805225) An inscribed brick from Pergamon in Asia Minor found at Northbourne Court, Betteshanger (located to name only). In 1940 certain stables on the estate of Lord Northbourne at Betteshanger, Kent, were demolished during civil defence training, and a stamped brick was found among the debris reading BAEINIKH (king). The cartouche measures 101 mm by 27 mm, and runs at an angle across the brick, which measures 196 x 96 x 24 mm. Although the brick had been built in, as revealed by a thin coating of plaster on the lower side and traces of it on the upper side, no other archaeological object wasfound in association with it, and it does not fit into this context inKent. It appears to have been imported presumably in the C18th or C19th. Many examples of a similar die were recorded in 1895 at Pergamon in Asia Minor, where tileries both "royal", as this Greek adjective indicates, and private seem to have existed. The brick is now in the collection of the Herne Bay Records Society. (1)
