Full Description

(TR 331 154 Sited to place name only). A possible Roman well at West Street, Northbourne. In 1838 while farm labourers were digging for chalk in a pit at West Street about 4 milesfrom Deal, they opened into a structure which measured six feet in diameter and between four and five feet deep. The circular structure was lined with chalk blocks about 7 inches in thickness and from 8 - 12 inches in breadth. The individual layers of chalk were separated by a tile course and each chalk block was separated from its neighbour by 6 - 7 inches. The finds included many bones, Kentish Ragstone and some marble. It is possible that it forms the upper shaft of a well. (1)
