Summary

York Gate was originally constructed in c.1540, dated from an inscription on the monument. It was built of Kentish ragstone: brick and flint additions have been made during repair works in 1795. The monument is Grade II listed and is in fact an arch not a gate.

Full Description

[TR 39896788] York Gate (NR) (1) York Gate, Harbour Street, Broadstairs was built c.1540, repaired in 1795. (2) The original York gate was of Kentish rag but it has been repaired in brick and knapped flint. Inscribed stones give the date of building, 1540, and date of repair, 1795. GP AO/63/121/A : gate from SE. (3) The York Gate, Harbour Street, Broadstairs. Grade II. Built about 1540 repaired in 1795. (For full description see list). (4) York Gate, an arch not a gate, basically medieval, with a portcullis groove. (5)
