Full Description
12 Roman coins were found in the ploughsoil removed as part of an excavation carried out by Wessex Archaeology in 2007. The earliest datable coin was a worn sestertius of Trajan (AD 98-117). It had been pierced for suspension, so as to serve as a pendant. There were two late 3rd century coins; one a copy of a radiate antoninianus (AD c.270-296), the other a radiate antoninianus of Carausius (AD 286-293). Four 4th century coins were found; a nummus of Constantine I (AD 307-318), a Constantinopolis issue of the House of Constantine (AD 330-348) and issues of Valens and the House of Valentinian (AD 364-378). The other coins are likely to be of the 3rd or 4th century. These coins extended the evidence of Roman activity in the area beyond the apparent AD 290 abandonment of the adjacent Four Elms Roundabout site.
Amongst the objects found by metal detecting the ploughsoil and spoil heaps was the mortar part of an early zoomorphic cosmetics grinder and a two piece Colchester type brooch of the mid 1st century AD. There was also a rare bracteate die [a type D], dated to the 5th to 7th century AD. A cast rectangular single-looped medieval buckle (AD 1250-1400) was found in the ploughsoil. Part of a foot of a cast metal vessel (medieval or post-medieval) was found in the spoilheaps. (1)
These excavationsand other activities are also collated and summarised in a January 2015 'Publication Report' by CgMs. The report makes concluding interpretations of the different phases of occupation at the site but these are far too detailed to summarise here. See Source Ref for further information. (3)
