Summary

In the 1930s during road works and construction of a flower bed, a single Anglo-Saxon burial was discovered, reportedly accompanied by an iron knife and fragments of a vessel. The burial in the south west facing slope led to speculation that it is part of a larger cemetery. The site lies on the brow of a chalk spur, slpoping away to the north, east and south. OD 30-35m.

Full Description

[TR 37906547] Anglo-Saxon Burials found AD 1932 [NR] (1,2) An Anglo-Saxon burial consisting of a skeleton iron knife and a piece of glass was discovered in 1932 when an electric cable trench was being dug under the pavement on the south side of Station Approach Road. H. Hurd, who dated the burial to c.670 AD considered that it was part of a cemetery as "bones were found near the same spot years ago when the road was being dug". (3,4) Hurd was responsile for authorizing the initial publication. (5) TR 379654. A skeleton was found in 1932 by workmen digging a trench to lay an electric cable c.1 foot below the surface, in the chalk, at the junction of the Station Approach Road and Park Road. (6) TR 379655 (sited to nearest 50m). Anglo Saxon burials. Site no 166. (7) TR 379655. The burial in the south west facing slope leads to speculation that it is one grave amidst a cemetery. Other graves may survive undetected beneath the metalling of the road and in nearby gardens.
