Full Description
Rectilinear enclosures visible as cropmarks in aerial photos of 1990 and the Google Earth image of 2007, to the west of Westwood.
In the 1990 aerial photo: one enclosure measures 30m x 20m, the other 45m x 32m. A less visible enclosure over-/underlies the smaller enclosure, measuring 38m x 28m, with the possibility of further ditches abutting these two enclosures. There is also a hint of three sides of a smaller enclosure, measuring 18m x 16m+. All are aligned 45 degrees to the cardinal points. In the 2007 Google Earth image three further enclosures on the same alignment are visible to the south. One measures 38m x 25m+. There is a linear feature linking this to another two enclosures which both measure 40m x 30m, with a 2m gap separating them. There is a suggestion of a central entranceway on the west side of both these enclosures, with possible structures in the northern enclosure.
See also TR 36 NE 439 and TR 36 NE 452.
Some of the features visible on the aerial photographs were partially exposed during an archaeological evaluation of the site carried out in 2022. several ditch sections were excavated but the enclosures remain undated (1)
The cropmark remains of a linear medieval settlement comprised of a series of at least six rectilinear ditched enclosures aligned NW-SE, presumably along a trackway or road which has not left a cropmark trace. They extend for at least 355m and have traces of internal pits (some rectilinear, possibly the remains of sunken featured buildings) and sub-divisions. The north-westerly enclosures overlap suggesting two phases of development. Towards the SE end are the cropmark traces of amorphous sunken or excavated areas in the same alignment as the settlement suggesting further elements of the settlement. A further rectilinear enclousre and ditch beyond the NW end of the alignment at TR 3556 6835, slightly north of the alignment may be part of the same settlement. These features have been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024.(2-3)
