Charted as LISBETH M 'notable debris' in the Marine zone.
Vessel remains:
Lies in position 51°27.22N, 001°27.01E at a depth of 11.1m in a general depth of 13m.
Sonar dimensions: 5 x 3 x 1.8m. Orientation 0. Scour depth 5m, Scour length 20m, Scour orientation 190°.
A 2007 examination revealed the remains to comprise 'small ill-defined wreck debris.' (1, 26.5.07)
In 1959 the remains had been 'dispersed to a depth of 33 ft.' (1, 6.10.59), and after a long period of being buried in the
sandy seabed the wreckage was observed in 1995, and reported as a 'small wreck in two pieces. Overall length 25m,
width 5m. [Lying] 105/295°'.
Documentary evidence:
'The British cargo ship LISBETH M sank after a collision with the SIR JOHN SNELL in foggy weather off Margate
on April 4th 1957. She was carrying a cargo of stone from Plymouth to London. Five of her crew of fourteen were
lost.'
'Oil engine, single shaft. Passage Plymouth for London. Sank following collision in fog with SS SIR JOHN SNELL.
