Maritime record TR 12 SE 11 - LIZZONIA

Summary

Remains of an English cargo coaster which foundered in 1961, in dense fog, after a collision with another vessel; approximately 3 miles WNW of the Varne Lightship. She had been built of steel in Goole in 1944 as an Empire F-type coaster, and was an engine driven vessel. When lost, she was en route from Antwerp to Plymouth with a cargo of potash.

Full Description

Charted as LIZZONIA entire wreck in the Marine zone.
Vessel remains:
Lies in position 50°57.35N, 001°07.93E at a depth of 18 in a general depth of 26m.
Sonar dimensions: 50 x 12 x 2.5m. Orientation 90°.
A 1997 examination of the wreckage revealed her to be 'in one piece, apparently upright.' (1, 30.1.97)
'She lies with her bows pointing to the south-west.'
Documentary evidence:
'A 410 ton British motor vessel, 142ft long with a beam of 27ft and a draught of 11ft, she sank within moments of
colliding with the ARCTIC OCEAN on March 16, 1961.'
'Ex-EMPIRE FAROUCHE-46, Built as an Empire F-type bulk carrier, re-named LIZZONIA 16.03.1961.'

'Laid down as CHANT 35 and re-named FABRIC 35 before launch... New diesel engine fitted in 1956.'
