Summary

Remains of a West German cargo coaster which grouded on the North edge of Margate Sand, 3.8 miles NNE of Gronham Bay before coming off and foundering. She had been en route from Rotterdam to Barking with a cargo of steel bars, rods and sheets. Built of steel in Oldesrum in 1966, she was an engine-driven vessel.

Full Description

Charted as WARFLETH, an obstruction - 'entire wreck' in the Marine zone.
Vessel remains:
Lies in position 51°26.50N, 001°17.56E. Orientation: 158°.
A 1991 examination of her position 'using small boat and dragging seabed with steel pole, no foul obtained and no
evidence of wreck remains' (1, 25.11.91) so it is unlear why her position has not yet been amended to DEAD. Perhaps
it is thought that she is still covered by the Margate sands.
Documentary evidence:
'Ran aground on Margate Sand while on passage Rotterdam for London (Pinn's Wharf).'
'Stranded in heavy weather on 04.01 on the north edge of Margate sand and was visible at all states of the tide. She
slipped off the sand bank and foundered the following day leaving her mainmast showing 1.2m.'
