Full Description
Charted as the AGEN, 'entire wreck' in the Marine zone.
Vessel structure:
Lies in position 51°10.71N, 001°31.62E at a depth of 11.5m in a general depth if 26m.
Sonar length: 118m. Sonar orientation: 165°. Scour depth: 4m.
'Upright; parts 56 x 20 and 26 x 18m lie 30m apart.'
In 1986 the wreckage was described as lying in two parts; in 2001 following a 1990 examination in which the
wreckage appeared as a 'small lump' mostly buried in sand and not projecting above seabed, it was charted as 'foul'
only; by 1997 she was considered to be buried, while a 2009 examination once again revealed the wreckage to be in
two parts of the dimensions given above.
Source 2 describes her 'two parts [as] now beginning to break up, [with] low wreckage... scattered to the SE of the
main site...'

Documentary evidence:
'Stranded during a gale when she broke her back and the two parts of the wreck separated. Coxswain Upton took the
Walmer lifeboat through the 30ft gap between the two parts of the hull no less than three times in order to save the
crew, but the master refused to abandon his command. It was only after he had spent a lonely night on board all by
himself that he consented to be taken off. For his rescue Fred Upton received a silver medal, his engineer, Percy
Cavell, his second bronze, and vellum certificates went to all seven members of the crew.'
