Sonar dimensions: 160 x 40 x 20m. Orientation: 80°. No scour.
Positively identified as the ANDAMAN by I Todd in 1999, though Source 1 does not make the means of identification
clear.
Described as a 'very large magnetic anomaly. In one piece with no scattered debris.' In a report that followed an
examination of the wreckage dated July 1998.
'She is still mainly intact and lies with her bow to the south-east... and stands a massive 24m from the seabed at 49m.
Her height and position in a strong tidal stream mean that means that there is often a great tide rip over her.'
According to Source 3, the funnel was still standing in 1988, 24m above the seabed.
Documentary evidence:
'Sank... while on passage Gotheburg to Calcutta.'
'The ANDAMAN started sinking at once and her crew of 38 took to their boats... Some salvage, particularly 10-ton
phosphor-bronze propeller, has been carried out on the wreck...'
'Sank following a collision in dense fog with the MV FORTUNE of Panama. The [Dover] lifeboat was launched
shortly after 3am but had great difficulty in finding the wreck due to the poor visibility. A message was then received
that the SS ARTHUR WRIGHT had picked up the survivors and managed to rendezvous at 5am, when she
transferred the crew to the Dover boat SOUTHERN AFRICA.'
She was carrying eight silver ingots, one of which was brought ashore by an officer.
