Maritime record TR 44 SE 12 - SAINT RONAN

Summary

Possible remains of a Scottish trawler which foundered in 1959, some 2.6 miles SSE of the Goodwin lightship after a collision with another vessel while en route from Fleetwood to Rotterdam. Built of steel in Lubeck in 1958, she was an engine-driven vessel. As there has been no positive identification of the vessel at this location, the location of the wreck derived from documentary evidence is recorded separately as 1524238.

Full Description

Charted as SAINT RONAN (Possibly), 'entire wreck' in the Marine zone.
Vessel structure:
Lies in position 51°08.20N, 001°32.56E at a depth of 40m in a general depth of 51m.
Sonar dimensions: 100m x 20m x 9m. Orientation: 30°. Strong magnetic anomaly, no scour.
'In one piece.'
The wreck was first located in December 1960, and a 1993 examination revealed the wreck to be 'apparently intact.'

She was still in 'one distinctive piece' in 1998 with 'no scattered debris.'
There has been no positive identification of the vessel however, and she is therefore charted as Possibly the SAINT
RONAN.

'Was involved in a collision with the ss MOUNT ATHOS in dense fog.'
