Full Description
Charted as ROSS TARIFA, an area of foul ground in the Marine zone.
Vessel structure:
Lies in position 51°13.33N, 001°33.95E in a general depth of 12m.
'`Now magnetic anomaly only.'
A wreck shown on aerial photographs was in 1968 presumed to be the ROSS TARIFA, which then disappeared
beneath the sand by 1974. As she is no longer a hazard to shipping the UK Hydrographic Office record of her position
has been amended to DEAD.
Documentary evidence:
'Broke adrift in heavy weather and went aground, eventually sinking in the sand and disappearing.'
`...went ashore and was abandoned, 292 degrees (true) 1.3 miles from E Goodwin light vessel.'
'Within a few days of the trawler ROSS TARIFA being wrecked on the Goodwins in 1948, the 'great ship swallower'
had already partially consumed her victim'. ( caption to photographs of the vessel being 'swallowed' by the sands).
In December of 1951, she'd been hit by 'a gigantic wave which stove in the wheelhouse.' Two crewmen, the Mate and
a deckhand were lost in the incident.
