Documentary evidence:
'The GENIMAR which was carrying 4,700 tons of zinc concentrates, was in the 'traffic separation' zone only recently
introduced in the Dover Straits area to prevent collisions. Shortly before the accident, HM Coastguards at the radar
tracking station at St Margaret's Bay had reported a 'rogue' vessel in the Channel sailing in the incorrect lane. The
survivors were picked up by the Greek [LARRY L with which the GANIMAR collided] and landed at Dover by the
lifeboat. Fuel oil covered a large surface area and the Dover Harbour Board tug DILIGENT stayed at sea for seven
hours spraying detergent, having been chartered by the Department of the Environment. Dispersal of the wreck was
undertaken by Salvage & Cable of Folkestone, who removed her masts, funnel, radar scanners and aerials.'
