Maritime record TR 06 NE 1079 - COLONIA

Summary

Probably only scant remains of an English spritsail barge which lost her mast in a storm and foundered on the west side of Pollard Spit after taking on water. Built of wood in 1897, she is said to have been the last barge to trade under sail in the Medway area.

Full Description

Vertical datum: LAT
Horizontal datum: OSGB 36
Charted as COLONIA, 'notable debris' in the inter-tidal zone.
Quality of fix: Position precisely known, though condition of debris uncertain.
Charted in position 51°22.55N, 000°58.80E in a general depth of 1m in the Swale Channel.
In 1957 she was noted to be 'dispersed', and 'as near as possible level with the ground' (1, 20.12.57) while a 1969
echo-sounder search could not locate any debris and the status of her charted position was amended to DEAD. It is
possible that scant remains may still be present.
'Lost in Gales.' (1, citing R Lee, 23.11.77)
'This wood sailing barge sank off Pollard Spit, both crew being saved along with their pets, a dog, a cat and a canary.'

'October 1956 she was on Pollard's Spit near the Isle of Sheppey when her mainsail was blown away in a gale. She
started to take on water and declared a total loss. Her crew were rescued by the Southend lifeboat. The COLONIA
was the last barge to trade under sail in the Medway area.'
