1954. Reported Roman skeleton found at No. 6 Joyce Green Walk, Temple Hill. [Dartford] (1) This skeleton was found whilst digging out the foundations for the outbuilding of No. 6 Joyce Green Walk. It lay on its back with its right knee raised under 9" of soil on the chalk. No grave goods were found as far as is known but my informant pointed out that the find was made initially by unsupervised labourers. The police and the Home Office were called in and it was the latter who apparently pronounced it Roman. Find sited to TQ 5480 7504. The delay caused by this procedure has made the contractors wary of reporting further similar finds but I was able to discover that human skulls and bones were discovered in March this year in association with a William and Mary Halfpenny. The find spot was apparently at what is known officially as 'Old Peoples Unit 2 C. 4'. It lies c. 100 yds. E. of the Joyce Green site. [This area has been completely developed. The positioning on the AM of the building is only sufficiently accurate to act as a guide.] (2) The building concerned is at TQ 5487502. No further finds have been made, The bones, of doubtful Roman age. are in store at Dartford Museum. (3)
