Full Description

TR 36696516 A crouched burial, with an extended one above it, was exposed in cutting drainage trenches for the new housing estate at Nethercourt Farm, St Lawrence, Ramsgate in October 1949. The site layin front of 12 Crummock Avenue. The pit, dug in solid chalk, was ovalin shape with nearly parallel long sides and rounded ends. The pit measured 9 feet in length by 3 ft 11 in in width, suggesting that the pit's primary function was not funerary. The lower crouched burial was facing eastwards and was covered with crushed and broken sherds ofa large hand made Neolithic pot. The filling of the grave contained charcoal; an oyster shell and two flint flakes. The second burial wasa a higher level and in a disorderly state. These inhumations were previously thought to be Bronze Age (1), however the bowl has now beenassigned to the Neolithic period. Dunning suggests that the grave maybe a re-used storage pit and that a Neolithic occupation site awaits discovery nearby. (2) The 1949 burials are sited at TR 36696516. (3) [TR 36696516] Bronze Age and Jiutish Burial found A.D. 1949 (NAT) (4) The bowl found with the crouched burial is Neolithic and is in Deal Castle Museum. (5) TR 3665 Nethercourt Farm. Neolithic flat grave; crouched male coveredwith decorated bowl (Whitehawk style), in upper fill disarticulate Adol. (6) [For Anglo-Saxon cemetery associated with this burial, see TR 36 NE 29] A large pit with vertical sides and flat bottom was discovered here in1949 during building work. Two sets of human skeletal material was found in the pit at different levels, over the lower crouched burial was a layer containing potsherds, charcoal and oyster shells. Above this the second skeleton was scattered around. It is possible that the first burial was made in a disused storage pitand that the second skeleton and debris was simply backfill. (7)
