Full Description

In 2007 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out a watching brief during building works at no. 14 Cambourne Avenue. A ditch was found crossing the site. It was aligned approximately east-west and it curved south at its easternmost exposed end, at a right angle suggesting it was part of an enclosure. In total 12m of the ditch length was exposed and it measured 1.6m across at its widest. Sherds of three Middle Bronze Age Deverel Rimbury vessels were found along with daub, flints, animal bones and shells. The daub suggests structures in close proximity and the flints and shells suggest the dumping of waste directly into the ditch. There were 12 sherds of three vessels. 11 joining of a flint tempered large Barrel Urn, c. 28cm in diameter at the rim, one sherd from a Globular Urn and one from a grog tempered vessel. The animal bone was from sheep/goat and cow/horse, all apparently having been broken in antiquity, probably as part of butchery. (1)
