Full Description
In 2006 an archaeological evaluation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology at the former Halstead Place School, north west of Halstead. An oval feature was found in Trench 1 and 2 . It is thought to be a clay lined feature associated with the manorial complex visible on the mapping from 1769, but backfilled after 1961. It may be part of a clay lined sunken garden. (1)
In 2009 a more complete excavation was undertaken on the site. Further investigation of the clay lined pit was carried out but no further conclusions could be reached, though finds of the 19th and 20th cenury were recovered. Several other clay-lined features were found, one fill had pottery dating to between 1840 and1900 (2)
