Full Description
In 2009 a desk based assessment was undertaken at the West Kent Cold Store, previous site of the Dunton Green Brick and Tile Works. By 1896 four clay extraction pits are situated on the site, three to the north and one to the south west and relate to the brick works. The clay was dug by hand and loaded on to trolleys on a rail track. By 1905 some of these were infilled and flooded, to be used as ponds. By 1936 the railway line across the site had been removed and a large clay pit was dug in the centre of the site. Two large rectangular buildings were added to the site along with five circular kilns. (1)
In 2010 a watching brief was done at the previous site of the Dunton Green Brick and Tile Works. In Area A the remains of a quarry pit were discovered in the south-west part of the site. (2)
