Full Description
Building survey undertaken by Wessex archaeology in 2011 of a subterranean air raid shelter prior to its demolition. The shelter was initially constructed in 1939 and consisted of four straight corridors in a square layout, with a single entrance. The walls consisted of pre-cast reinforced concrete panels around a steel girder frame. A symmetrical series of corridoors was added sometime in the following few years, though this time construcred of poured concrete around a wisted wire frame. Man hole covers were located at most of the junctions, presumably as escape hatches. No internal fittings were present, though wall studs reveal the location of benches and bunks. There is no evidence of sanitary facilities, and no sign of permanent electric lights. The shelter was in a moderate state of repair prior to its demolition in 2011. (1)
