Monument record TR 36 NE 173 - Romano-British cemetery, Lindenthorpe Road, Broadstairs

Summary

A Romano-British cemetery was discovered in 1896 during the excavation of six trenches. Twenty human skeletons were found and they appeared to be huddled together, as though they were buried in a great hurry. It is thought that they may have been victims of an epidemic. Amongst the artefacts recovered from the site were a piece of amber that had been bored as if for wearing round the neck, a bronze ring and three Roman vases. Possibly part of a wider site (see also TR 36 NE 5).

Full Description

TR 393689. A Romano British burial site was excavated in 1896 by cutting six trenches 3 foot deep x 2 foot wide in section. Some 20 human skeletons were found in these trenches huddled together, as though they were buried in a great hurry leading to speculation that they were victims of an epidemic. A piece of amber, bored as if for wearing round the neck, a bronze ring and three Roman vases one of which was Durobrivian ware, were also found among the skeletons. There is good reason to believe that these remains are part of an extensive site. (See also TR 36 NE 5) (1)
