Summary

Romano-British burial and an amphora containing pottery were found in 1902 at St. Lawrence. The pottery included fragments of a wine jar, easter ware, and some upchurch or colchester wares, as well as the handle rim and fragments of a large bronze bucket shaped vessel.

Full Description

TR 369652. Romano-British burial and pottery. A grave was discoveredhere 3 feet deep in the chalk in 1902. It was apparently of sufficient size to hold a 'wine cask' (amphora?) which contained the pottery. The pottery consisted of fragments of a wine jar (?) together with fragments of grey ware which resembled Upchurch ware butcould be Colchester as features like the mouth widening inside above the neck were evident. There were also fragments of Easter ware as well as the handle rim and fragments of a large bronze bucket shaped vessel. (1)
