Full Description
A George V pillar box, Platform 1, Priory Station. The roadside post box was introduced in Britain following the 1840 postal reform which provided for universal affordable postage. In 1859 an improved cylindrical design of pillar box was created for standard use nationwide. This design had its posting aperture positioned beneath a cap for greater protection from rainwater. The pillar box on St Johns Road / Folkestone Road is of this type and carries the monarchical insignia of George V. (1) Letter Box Study Group Box Type: 27/1. Dates from 1930 to 1933. (2)
