Full Description

[TQ 56167480 - sited from plan, fig. 1.] A Belgic cremation cemetery was uncovered at Cotton Lane Pit, Stone, in 1939, where 24 almost complete pots (only two definitely known to contain cremated bones), four bronze brooches, etc. were found. Another group of pottery, 60ft away, included a Roman jug and bowl. "On the evidence it seems probable that the main cemetery was used between A.D. 24-45 by the native tribes, and that sporadic burials may have occurred up to the end of the Flavian period". (1) The pottery and finds from this Belgic Burial Ground are to be seen in Dartford Borough Museum. No further burials reported. The pit is now disused. (2)
