Full Description
In 1881 a "draw-well" denehole suddenly became exposed at Chesly, c. 2 miles from Newington. The shaft was 5ft. 7 inches across the mouth and cut for 37ft. through Thanet Sand; below which was chalk. At 45ft. it widened out into a chamber 15ft. in diameter with its floor 63ft. 7 inches below the surface. The chamber has four recesses 8ft. wide and 9ft. high. Tool marks could be distinctly seen upon the chalk. Two others have commenced to appear in the same field 10ft. and 10ft. 8 inches in diameter respectively and there is a fourth, which fell open several years ago, 60 yards from the latter. (1) There are two deneholes on Chesley Farm, at TQ 8490 6396 and TQ 8461 6372: both are open but used as rubbish pits. There is no trace or knowledge of the others noted by Payne. Surveyed at 1:2500.
