Full Description
In 1994 an excavation on the Medway Tunnel eastern approach was undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust. A number of features have been interpreted as a Late Iron Age circular hut, several post holes and a curved gully are the evidence for this. Older postholes suggest that I house had been repared at least once. A flint and scorched clay hearth was also present. A layer of ash, charcoal and daub maybe a result of the hut having brunt down. Pottery also found was dated between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD.
It was observed that the settlement, which had orginated in Iron Age and continued in various troughtout the Roman period. Also found was a ditch, which cute features belonging to the Iron Age settlement, which appeared to be used for long period, it experienced recutting, before being backfilled and levelled. A small part of the Romano-British settlement was exposed during excavation. Ceramic evidence suggest the site was abandoned late 2nd - early 3rd century AD, giving an approximate occupation length of 200 years. (1)
