Full Description
The Chardon mausoleum occupies a prominent position close to the entrance to the cemetery and on the main drive to the chapels. It is also one of very few mausoleums in St John’s Cemetery. The Chardon mausoleum dates to no earlier than 1888 when Maria Chardon bought plots in the cemetery at Margate. The earliest burial is of Francis Edouard Chardon (d.1907) an indigo planter in Bengal, followed by his wife Maria Teresa Matilda Chardon (d.1921) and their son Francis Edouard Chardon who died in 1925. The mausoleum also contains the remains of Elsie Ethel Davies, F E Chardon's housekeeper and his dog Gyp. The tablet to Mrs Chardon emphasizes that she was a granddaughter of Signor Rapallo of Paris "who aided the Emperor Napoleon the third to attain the throne of France". This connection was considered so important that the Chardons named their house in Llandudno Rapallo House. This house, together with a
collection of paintings and artifacts, was bequeathed to the town of Llandudno in 1927.
A Gothic Revival mausoleum built of large Portland stone blocks with a gabled slate roof. The gabled ends are supported by shaped buttresses and have triangular copings topped by finials. The entrance door has polished red granite colonnettes, ornamental iron hinges to the plank door and the family name ‘Chardon’ inscribed above the door under a trefoil shaped ventilation hole The rear gable end is blank except for the trefoil ventilation hole. The sides are decorated by a single colonnette with a decorative Gothic capital. Each side of the colonnette are marble memorial tablets with lead lettering. One of these is blank. The interior of the mausoleum was not inspected. (1)
