Full Description
In 1995 an evaluation was done by Wessex Archaeology at the Weatherlees Waste Treatment Works. A perfectly circular ditch ditched was noticed. When part of this ring ditch was investigated, it yielded a small polished axe and a single sherd of pottery dated Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age. Unfortunately before it could be investigated fully it was built upon. Another corner of an enclosure is situated close by. (1)
The flint axe found in the ring ditch had a slightly convex blade and irregular straight edges which taper down to a narrow butt. The blade has been honed to a fine polish. These axes are diagnostic to the Neolithic period but it does little to help date the ring ditch. It is probable that it was made locally. It is not inconceivable that the implement was not aquired by a Bronze Age occupant. (1)
