Summary

A former manor house is located at Great Chilmington and this was surrounded by a homestead moat: the north west and south west arms of this remain water filled and in good condition. The current house is mainly 17th century in date.

Full Description

TQ 9786 4021: Great Chilmington was formerly surrounded by a homestead moat the NW and SW arms of which remain water filled and in good condition. Part of the NE arm survives as a depression with a drainage channel in the bottom but elsewhere it has been destroyed. The house is mainly 17th c. and later and of little architectural interest externally, but it incorporates some earlier work including a pointed doorway.
